Ubicado a una hora de la Ciudad de México, y sólo quince minutos de la zona arqueológica de Teotihuacán; se encuentra un majestuoso inmueble conventual: el ex convento de San Agustín de Acolman.
El cual, fue construido por la orden de San Agustín a partir de 1539, que es considerado por muchos, la joya del plateresco en América.
Abarca 2.5 hectáreas entre construcción y espacios abiertos; y posee dos plantas con dos claustros de diferentes estilos arquitectónicos, donde podrás imaginar la vida que se llevaba en el convento. Incluso en una de las celdas puedes ver la ambientación que tenían en su época de esplendor, así como un vestigio de la cocina, un lavabo y una tina.
Lo más representativo de este complejo y que no puedes dejar de admirar es su pintura mural, que es de las más antiguas conservadas en América Latina.
Así como su cruz atrial de manufactura tequitqui. Es decir, manifestaciones artísticas realizadas por los indígenas luego de la conquista española. Una fusión de arte mesoamericano con europeo.
Además, no dejes de admirar en el cubo de las escaleras, el mural de la virgen lactante del siglo XVIII, y la pintura de la capilla abierta, dedicada a Santa Catarina de Alejandría.
Cabe mencionar que desde 1921 funciona como museo y en 1933 fue declarado monumento histórico.
Pero no sólo eso, pues este ex convento es considerado la cuna de la navidad mexicana. ¿Por qué motivo?
Se puede hablar de que en Acolman nacieron prácticamente las posadas; y es que estas tienen como antecedente las misas de aguinaldo, en las que se obsequiaban colaciones a los indígenas que asistían.
Estas misas, se permitieron celebrar en la Nueva España por intercesión del prior de Acolman en 1587, fray Diego de Soria, a través de la bula que expidió el Papa Sixto V para realizarlas en la iglesia de Acolman.
Estas debían celebrarse durante nueve días previos a la fecha del nacimiento de Jesús; es decir, del 16 al 24 de diciembre de cada año, y en ellas se obtenían indulgencias plenarias y remisión de los pecados para los asistentes.
Su objetivo era atraer a la religión cristiana a los habitantes del valle de Acolman. La coincidencia de estas misas con la festividad prehispánica del nacimiento de Huitzilopochtli, ayudaron a convertirla en una ceremonia cristiana.
En el siglo XVI, se sumarían las representaciones teatrales, hoy llamadas pastorelas como medio evangelizador.
Sería también en Acolman donde empezaría la historia mexicana de las piñatas de picos hace más de cuatro siglos. ¿Interesante verdad?
