Un poco de historia:
La nieve encuentra su origen en la época prehispánica, aunque los Xochimilcas le daban un sentido religioso; y es que a Tlateloco, el que era el principal mercado mexica, llegaba la nieve y se podía adquirir a un precio bastante elevado, aproximadamente 20 semillas de cacao, por lo que sólo era consumido por sacerdotes y grandes señores, principalmente en la época de calor.
Cabe mencionar que el hielo era traído en sacos de pieles cubiertos con fibras de ixtle desde los volcanes Popocatépetl e Iztaccíhuatl, por lo que se empleaban dos días en su traslado. El primero para el trayecto de Santiago Tulyehualco a Chalco, y el segundo rumbo a los volcanes.
Nuestros antepasados picaban finamente el hielo y lo endulzaban con tuna o miel de maguey; luego, llenaban vasijas de barro para llevar la nieve en canoa hasta su destino: el mercado de Tlatelolco.

Sobre el origen de la feria:
La Feria de la Nieve sería instituida en 1529 por Fray Martín de Valencia, uno de los primeros misioneros llegados a la Nueva España, aunque sólo tenía una duración de un par de días, desvaneciéndose un poco con el tiempo.
Hasta que, en 1885, algunas familias de Santiago Tulyehualco retomaron esta tradición; convirtiendo a la nieve en uno de los productos de mayor arraigo en Xochimilco, por su preparación artesanal y creación de sabores; algunos bastante exóticos como pétalos de rosa, mariscos, pulque con gusano de maguey, mole, hierbabuena, lechuga, víbora de cascabel, y tequila, sólo por mencionar algunos.
